The Akwa Ibom State Government Government has debunked media report alleging fraudulent budgetary over-expenditure by officials of the state government on the 2019 budget.
In a joint press briefing by top state government officials in Uyo, the state capital, the Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Akan Okon explained that the findings arrived at by the said report was based on an unauthentic financial record.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong said the authentic version of the financial report which was sent to the legislature and the Auditor General was produced on the International Public Sector Accounting Standards -IPSAS, adding that the state government had in September 2019 issued a memo retracting the erroneous financial document which the journalists relied on in the said publication.
On his part the state Commissioner for Finance, Linus Nkan reiterated that the state government would always adopt transparency and accountability in governance with due consideration for citizens’ participation.
Our correspondent Anthony Esin reports that the Accountant-General of the State, Pastor Uwem Andrew-Essien was also present during the press conference but did not, however, say anything in defence of the allegation of financial impropriety levelled against his office in the previous year’s budget execution.
