Akwa Ibom INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Mike Igini meets with political parties ahead of Essien Udim rerun polls billed for January 25.

Ahead of the court-ordered national and state assembly rerun elections in Essien Udim Local Government Area billed for January 25, the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, in Akwa Ibom State has met with chairmen and secretaries of political parties taking part in the election for preparations.

Briefing the party men at the State INEC headquarters, Udoudoma Avenue, Uyo, the State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Mike Igini who said that only political parties that fielded candidates in the 2019 election will be allowed to partake in the rerun election, warned other political parties that have no business with the entire process to stay away from the polling centers during the exercise.

While noting that training has commenced for ad hoc staff and card readers are ready for the polls, Barrister Igini added that a large meeting with the political stakeholders in Essien Udim will be convened on a date to be announced later before the election.

Igini who pledged the commitment of the commission to ensure a free and fair rerun stated that there was no case of death reported in the state during the 2019 general elections in the state, and so the rerun should also be violent free.

Meanwhile, our correspondent Anthony Esin reports that the commission has directed the political parties participating in the rerun election to submit names of their party agents to the on or before 18th January.
