As world menstrual hygiene day is celebrated today, governments, institutions, households and individuals have been admonished to put policies in place that encourage the viewing of menstrual hygiene for girls as a fundamental human right that cannot be neglected, while disabusing the myths surrounding menstruation as being a woman’s problem, amongst others.
Speaking with Planet News, health expert, Dr Eka Ukpe, enumerated the requirements for proper hygiene during menstrual circle, while also evaluating the negatives that abound when sanitary precautions during a woman’s period are not strictly adhered to.
According to Dr Eka Ukpe, it is pertinent that menstrual hygiene is viewed as responsibility for all, especially for vulnerable girls in rural areas who do not have the required awareness and facilities to cater for themselves.
The world menstrual hygiene day is celebrated every 28th day of May to significantly put a stop to the taboos, myths, social culture and religious restrictions, which are a big barrier in the path of menstrual hygiene management, and to raise awareness on the importance of proper menstrual hygiene management by girls and women of reproductive age around the world.
