Zimbabwe president cuts short holiday over doctors’ strike

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa cut short his annual vacation to try to resolve an impasse with doctors who have been on strike for a month. According to a government spokesman, hundreds of junior doctors in public hospitals across Zimbabwe withdrew their services in November demanding salaries in US dollars, an increase in on-call allowances and an improvement in drug supplies and provision of functional equipment. Negotiations have so far hit a brick wall with the government insisting it has no capacity to pay salaries in US dollars.

Federal Government has begun implementation of the mandatory usage of the National Identification Number -NIN. The National Identity Management Commission-NIMC, which announced the development, said it was in line with the government’s directive on identity management in the country. The United States and Israel have officially quit the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO. The withdrawal is mainly procedural yet serves a new blow to UNESCO, co-founded by the US after World War II to foster peace. JAMB warns candidates against fake advertisement on social media

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board -JAMB has called on prospective candidates to disregard advertisements in the social media, announcing sales of registration documents with some illegal centres and subject combinations. The board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, gave the warning in an interview in Lagos. He said JAMB would soon publish the list of all approved centres in all its state offices nationwide to guide prospective candidates in choosing centres nearest to them.
