Governor Udom Emmanuel urges FG to partner states in skills development

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has called on the federal Government to partner with state governments in establishment of skills acquisition centers in the Nigeria Correctional centers across the nation.

Governor Emmanuel who stated this when the Presidential Committee on correctional service Reform and De-congestion, led by its chairman Justice Ishaq Bello paid him a courtesy visit at the state EXCO Chambers, Government House Uyo, said the state government will pay the fines for persons convicted for minor offences in order to ease the congestion of the correctional centres.

While urging the Committee not to pardon inmates whose crimes are capital in nature ranging from kidnapping, Governor Emmanuel however assured the committee of the state government’s readiness to implement their recommendations.

Government house correspondent Jane Uwa reports that earlier the chairman of the committee and chief judge of FCT, Justice Ishaq Bello who had said they were in the state to assess the state of the correctional service and make recommendations to enable it meet the international standard, added that they will present books to the inmates as part of the reform process to transform their minds and enable them integrate fully into the society once released.
