INEC constitutes committee to investigate  violence in Akwa Ibom and Imo January 25 rerun polls,

The Independent National Electoral Commission – INEC has set up a high-powered delegation on the result of last weekend’s rerun election in some units in Essien Udim Local Government area of Akwa Ibom State and Oru East/Orsu/Orlu Federal Constituency of Imo State.

The delegation comprises a National Commissioner, Resident Electoral Commissioners -RECS and other workers of the commission.

Hoodlums had disrupted the collation of results at a designated centre in Orlu during the last Saturday’s rerun election in the constituency.

The thugs injured INEC’s workers and other persons at the centre. They also destroyed result sheets and damaged the commission’s building.

A statement by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman on Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the commission also suspended the process in some polling units in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, where INEC workers were abducted.

But the commission insisted that the rerun recorded remarkable improvement over the previous elections.
