The member representing Uyo, Uruan, Nsit Atai, Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Michael Enyong, popularly known as ‘Baba Ntan’ has empowered 33 persons selected from the four local government areas in the Constituency as well as other local government areas in the state with one million naira each to enable them establish businesses of their choice.
The Uyo Federal lawmaker, who chairs the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals Development, was flanked by his wife, Mary-grace Enyong while presenting the funds to the beneficiaries over the weekend. Enyong noted that the gesture was part of his special empowerment programme meant to uplift average of three hundred of his constituents out of poverty in order for them to be self-reliant.
Reacting to the development, former Caretaker Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Otuekong Uduak Ekpewo, said the lawmaker had in the past facilitated employment for many indigenes of the area and was not relenting in doing more for his people, adding that the empowerment of the 33 persons was in commemoration of the state’s 33rd anniversary.
Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke with Planet News, thanked the lawmaker for coming to their aide while pledging to invest the money judiciously in their businesses.
Our correspondent Anthony Esin reports that the empowerment programme was done in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission –NHRC which was represented at the event by Roselyn Neji, while the event also saw a total of 250 other beneficiaries smiling home with at least twenty thousand naira each from the lawmaker.
