Nigerians have been advised to desist from self-medicating with chloroquine in an effort to protecting themselves from contracting the novel coronavirus.

A medical doctor, Daniel Ubokudom while reacting to the recent pronouncement by US President Donald Trump that chloroquine can be used for the treatment of Covid-19, lamented the impact of the statement on some Nigerians.

While faulting the claim, Dr. Ubokudom insisted that such pronouncement was hasty as the procedure for such declaration was not followed and advised Nigerians not to intoxicate their system with the drugs but should continue with the health measures outlined by the World Health Organization to prevent and curb the spread of the virus.

According to him, the anti-malaria drug was banned in Nigeria following its ineffectiveness in killing the malaria parasite and its side effect on the body.

Recall that the Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye had pointed out that the agency has not approved Chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19 but for clinical trials to find treatment for the virus.

IN THE MEANTIME – The Nigeria Medical Association – NMA and other Health Care Professionals in Akwa Ibom State have expressed worry over the level of preparedness of the state government to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking as a guest on Planet Radio audience participatory programme, THE PEOPLE’S PARLIAMENT, the State NMA Public Relations Officer, Dr. Emmanuel John said having reviewed the effort of the state government since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Nigeria, health professionals rising from their meeting called for a stronger collaboration between the government and health workers.

According to him, the government was yet to involve health professionals into their plan, adding that such move will only be counter-productive and expose the state to danger.

He called on the government to be proactive in its measure through the acquisition of health equipment and proper screening at all entry points into the state as obtainable in other states of the federation.
