President Muhamadu Buhari has been urged to as a matter of urgent public importance reconstitute the Federal Character Commission.
This call was made by the member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Unyime Idem while presenting a motion on the need for the Federal Government to appoint 37 federal commissioners for the Commission.
The Deputy Chairman, Communications Committee of the House said the essence of Federal Character Principle will be defeated if the Commission responsible for its implementation is understaffed and not properly constituted.
He therefore urged President Buhari to urgently nominate 37 commissioners to take charge of the Commission to be alive to its constitutional mandate of ensuring equitable distribution of resources, appointments and employment among the federating units to ensure unity, togetherness and sense of belonging.
In the said motion which was unanimously endorsed by his colleagues, Idem also prayed the House to mandate its Committee on Federal Character to ensure compliance.
