As the world marked the 2020 world health day yesterday with the theme “support Nurses and Midwives” government at all levels and indeed the people have been urged to appreciate the role played by all health professionals in keeping the world healthy and safe in the face of the covid 19 pandemic.
A resident Physician at the University of Uyo teaching Hospital, Doctor Edesiri Ighorodje who gave the charge in an interview with Planet News said this year’s theme is apt in recognition of the sacrifices of the health professionals in the fight against the global Covid-19 pandemic by putting their health at risk in protecting the broader community.
While stating that the major challenges Nigerian nurses face is being understaffed and overwhelmed at their duty post, the medical practitioner, therefore, urged the government to ensure the employment of more nurses and improve work environment and incentives for the health professionals as an encouragement for their efforts.
Our correspondent Jane Uwa reports that Doctor Ighorodje further used the opportunity to advise the people on the need to stay safe and practice the necessary Covid-19 preventive measures by washing of hands with soap, use of hand sanitizer, practice of social distancing as they strive to curb the spread of corona virus in the state, country and the world at large.
World health day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on April 7 under the sponsorship of the world health organization.
