As the 2019 general elections approaches, residents in uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital have again called on the Independent National Electoral Commission-INEC, to be neutral in the conduct of the elections and any form of rigging should not be encouraged by the electoral body.
Some of the residents who made the call in a chat with our correspondent Jane Uwa said the hope of the country rests on the commission as the unity could be threatened by election-related violence. They further expressed hope that their votes will count in the elections.
Some respondents who however cited the alleged manipulation of election results during the last gubernatorial elections conducted in Ekiti and Osun states, further expressed their reservations to the capability of the commission to conduct a credible outing this year.
Meanwhile INEC has said it would not use electronic methods for the transfer of results for polls. According to INEC National Commissioner in charge of Operations, Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu, INEC took the step because the Electoral Act amendment Bill which made provision for it was not assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari.
