Former Deputy Speaker of the AKHA, Uwem Udoma faults report that NCDC scored Akwa Ibom State Government 99 percent on COVID-19 contact-tracing,
Former Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Uwem Udoma has described a recent newspaper report that the National Centre for Disease Control-NCDC has scored Akwa Ibom State Government 99 percent on contact-tracing and other critical elements in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic as capable of creating a false sense of confidence and illusionary victory that may be counterproductive.
The report had stated that the Covid-19 regulatory body singled out Akwa Ibom State for its bold and the courageous work in a critical element of stemming the rate of the infection of the virus-Contact-tracing. The agency also reportedly scored the State 2.7 percent on the “Proportions of Contacts that have developed symptoms which is a great success ratio. According to Udoma, such report paints a picture of self glorification of someone who is still in the battle field and may result in over confidence which may lead to lack of focus.
The former Deputy Speakere qually condemned the media spat between the APC Deputy State Chairman, Doctor Ita Udosen and the PDP Publicity Secretary, Barrister Ini Ememobong, insisting that this is not the time to malign people who offer constructive criticisms to government on the pandemic as such advocacy and public outcry has helped put government in check.
He reiterated his call for the government to partially open up the economy so that businesses can come back to life gradually while also ensuring the proposed interstate lockdown by the Nigerian Governor’s Forum do not undermine the movement of essential workers and commodities .
He admonished that power is transient and nobody will stay in government forever and as such, government officials must always see themselves as servants of the people while also cautioning advocates of complete lockdown to know that such advocacy is capable of instilling fear, desperation and panic to vulnerable Nigerians, advising all to always avoid speculation but wait for instructions from the NCDC and the state government and diligently adhere to all given instructions
