Senegal’s Supreme Court rules against appeal by jailed presidential hopeful
Senegal’s Supreme Court has ruled that jailed presidential hopeful Khalifa Sall could not appeal a prison sentence for embezzlement, likely ending his chance of running as a free man in February polls.
The popular former mayor of Dakar was arrested in March 2017 on suspicion of embezzling 3 million dollars in public funds and was sentenced to five years in jail.
ELSEWHERE – Somalia has told the UN Security Council not to interfere in its national affairs after expelling a UN envoy who questioned the government’s decision to arrest an al-Shabaab defector running for election.
Somali Ambassador Abukar Osman did not specifically mention his government’s decision to order Nicholas Haysom to leave but he argued that Somalia was in need of support, not criticism from the world body.
