Fresh clashes erupt during protest in Wisconsin following police shooting of Jacob Blake
Police fired tear gas on Monday when a protest demanding racial justice in the city of Kenosha, Wisconsin turned violent, as rage continues to build in the US after the shooting of a black man by a white officer.
The clashes erupted for a second night after video circulated showing 29-year-old Jacob Blake being shot and wounded in the back multiple times by Wisconsin police on Sunday. According to his attorney his three children— 3, 5 ,and 8—were in the car watching. Mr. Blake is in stable condition in an intensive care unit.
The clashes came hours after some two dozen police faced off against hundreds of demonstrators chanting “No justice, no peace” and “Say his name — Jacob Blake.”
In a statement released on Monday, Wisconsin Department of Justice said the officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave. The state’s Division of Criminal Investigation is heading an investigation into the shooting and seeks to “provide a report of the incident to the prosecutor within 30 days,” according to a statement from the DOJ.
The statement provided by the state’s DOJ does not identify the officers or indicate why they confronted Blake.
The night before Blake’s shooting, protests erupted in Lafayette, Louisiana, after police killed a Black man — Trayford Pellerin, 31 — outside a convenience store.
