Buhari who made the call at the 14th extra-ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union on ‘Silencing the Gun’, held virtually, urged African leaders to promote the implementation of arms control instruments and embargoes. The Nigerian leader said the increasing number of peace agreements and efforts in conflict situations across Africa demonstrated a resolve to chart a new course and called for the monitoring and evaluation mechanism to gauge the implementation at the continental level. Buhari said intra and inter-state resurgence of conflicts in Africa underscores the imperative for the African Union Mediation Support Unit to be strengthened.

Head of the funeral planning committee, James Gbeho, in a press release said the family, in consultation with government, agreed on the date. The funeral rites for the 73-year-old will come off at the Independence Square in Accra. Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving head of state and founder of the National Democratic Congress, died on November 12 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
