Tinubu Orders Government MDAs to Buy Only Gas-Powered Vehicles

President Bola Tinubu has instructed that all requests from members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for the purchase of traditional petrol-dependent vehicles for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) should be rejected.

This directive was issued during Monday’s council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, which President Tinubu chaired.

He urged the concerned council members to instead pursue the procurement of vehicles compliant with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) standards, emphasizing the need for value-driven purchases.

Following this directive, Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s spokesperson issued a statement stating that this decision is a key part of the administration’s strategy to boost energy security, improve efficiency, and decrease fuel expenses, indicating a notable transition toward cleaner energy sources.

Ngelale clarified that CNG vehicles, recognized for their reduced emissions, offer a cost-efficient option for energy users in Nigeria.

He added that this initiative is in line with Nigeria’s objectives to shift towards more sustainable energy alternatives.

Ngelale said, “This nation will not progress forward if we continue to dance on the same spot.

“We have the will to drive the implementation of CNG adoption across the country, and we must set the example as public officials in leading the way to that prosperous future that we are working to achieve for our people.

“It starts with us, and in seeing that we are serious, Nigerians will follow our lead”.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu launched the Presidential CNG Initiative in October 2023 in response to the fuel subsidy being removed on May 29, 2023, with the goal of supplying more reasonably priced, secure, and ecologically friendly energy.

Last month, President Tinubu revealed his plans to unveil the first set of 200 compressed natural gas CNG, propelled buses before his first year anniversary on May 29, 2024.
