Former President Goodluck Jonathan has lamented that honesty and consistency are rare in Nigerian politics, describing the space as one filled with liars and betrayers.
Speaking in Benin, Edo State, at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff and ex-Edo deputy governor, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, Jonathan praised him as a loyal and dependable ally.
“You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening,” Jonathan said. “I’ve witnessed a lot of betrayals, especially during my 2015 election. Mike is somebody who would take a bullet on my behalf. He is someone whose word you can take to the bank. Most other politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank.”
Jonathan’s comments come amid fresh calls from political figures — including former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana, and Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed — urging him to contest the PDP presidential ticket in 2027.
So far, Jonathan has not publicly responded, although his wife, Patience Jonathan, recently declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recalling his backing during the 2011 elections and promising to campaign alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in 2027.
