Senate Receives 61 State Creation Proposals, Says None Has Passed Legislative Process

The Spokesman of the 10th National Assembly, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, has revealed that the Senate has so far received 61 proposals for the creation of new states across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The figure marks a rise from the 42 requests earlier confirmed in July by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, with an additional 19 proposals submitted in recent weeks.

Adaramodu, who represents the Ekiti South Senatorial District, stressed that state creation is a complex legislative process that involves auditing demographic, geographic, and historical data before any recommendation can be made.

According to him, the procedure will also require a comprehensive public hearing where all proposals will be scrutinised. He explained that no request will advance until these requirements are met, adding that deliberations will continue after the Senate reconvenes from its parliamentary recess.

The lawmaker reiterated that the Senate cannot endorse any state for creation without a thorough evaluation of all factors to ensure fairness, viability, and national interest.
