The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by another two weeks.
Previously, the unions had issued a seven-day ultimatum over unresolved welfare-related grievances, warning of a potential nationwide strike if their demands were not addressed.
In a joint statement signed by SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions condemned what they described as the unfair distribution of earned allowances among university staff and the continued non-payment of outstanding entitlements, among other issues.
Ibrahim reminded stakeholders that the JAC had earlier notified the government in a letter dated June 18, 2025, about several unresolved labour matters — a move that led to a meeting with the Minister of Education on July 4, 2025.
However, in a new communication addressed to their chapters nationwide on Tuesday, the unions stated that the decision to extend the ultimatum was reached after a follow-up meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, held on Friday, September 19, 2025.
“The leadership of JAC of NASU and SSANU, after a meeting on Monday, September 22, 2025, resolved to update you on the status of our demands submitted to the Federal Government for resolution,” the letter read.
“You will recall that in our last correspondence, we informed you about a letter sent to the Minister of Education, requesting urgent intervention on the unresolved labour issues affecting our members in universities and inter-university centres. We had issued a seven-day ultimatum, after which we planned to begin lawful industrial actions if no progress was made.”
