Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has sharply criticized First Lady Remi Tinubu’s public appeal for donations in celebration of her birthday, calling it an insensitive move amid Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis.
Reacting to the appeal, Obi expressed dismay, saying: “If at this point, the First Lady is asking struggling Nigerians to donate for her birthday, then we are finished as a country.”
He emphasized that leadership should reflect empathy and sacrifice, especially in difficult times when millions of citizens are grappling with poverty, inflation, and insecurity. Obi questioned the moral standing of such a request, pointing out that it sends the wrong message from those in power.
Obi’s comments have added to growing public outrage, with many Nigerians criticizing the appeal as tone-deaf and detached from the realities of everyday life.
As of now, there has been no official response from the First Lady’s office.
